Job Evaluation
What is Job Evaluation?
The Job Evaluation (JE) Scheme was specifically developed for the NHS across the UK and determines the basic pay of staff covered by Agenda for Change. This is done by measuring NHS jobs across a range of factors and allocating relevant levels according to the job role being considered. Each of these levels have an allocated points score and the total points determine the appropriate pay band for the job. This allows jobs in differing professions but with equal overall weight to be appropriately measured. The JE Scheme is designed to ensure we implement an apply equal pay for work of equal value.
Detailed information on the JE scheme can be obtained from the Job Evaluation Handbook.
This JE Scheme applies in the following circumstances:
- A new post is developed within the service;
- A service-initiated change occurs impacting on the roles and responsibilities of a
- post;
- Where there is agreement that a post has changed significantly;
- A collective request for re-evaluation is lodged by a staff-side organisation(s)
- where the same job description is in use for a number of staff;
- A post has been evaluated nationally for use through NHS Scotland.
In the NHS we follow the Job Evaluation Scheme to determine the pay bands for all posts under the NHS terms and conditions of service (Agenda for Change), which helps support equal pay and our staff can be confident that they are paid appropriately for their role. Job Evaluation measures the skills, responsibilities and effort that are required for a job, and allocates it to a pay band. It does this by matching jobs to national job profiles or evaluating jobs locally, to set the basic pay for staff. You will find a Job Evaluation Handbook, training on Job Evaluation, and a collection of National Job Profiles on the MSG website.

Job Descriptions
You may wish to Revise or Update a Job Description, or create an entirely new Job Description.
Revising or Updating a Job Description (JD) is more commonly accepted than creating an entirely new JD. If you submit a new JD for review, and it is too similar enough to an existing JD, then it will be dismissed. In either case you can use the guidance, checklist, and template below to assist you.
